This is the fifth and final piece of my serial killer series. Thank goodness it's all over...
In April 1973, Kemper battered his mother to death with a pick hammer as she slept. He decapitated her, raped her headless body, and used her head as a dartboard after putting her vocal cords in the garbage disposal. His murderous urges not yet sated, he then invited his mother's friend over and killed her too, strangling her. He then drove eastward, but when no word of his crimes hit the radio airwaves he became discouraged, stopped the car, called the police and confessed to being the Co-ed Killer. He told them what he had done and waited for them to pick him up, seemingly unashamed as he confessed to necrophilia and cannibalism. At his trial he pleaded insanity, but he was found guilty on eight counts of murder. He asked for the death penalty but, with capital punishment suspended at that time, he instead received life imprisonment. (Source from Wikipedia)
Thanks. I'm glad you like the blood stains. I was worried that it might look a bit over the top, but then again it was such a grusome murder that maybe I didn't show enough blood.
This is basically a simple drawing using a H and a 6B pencil on a piece of browny coloured paper. I also used a white colour pencil to add some highlights.
The blood is just paint that I carefully flicked over the areas I wanted. I then took a photograph of the whole thing and played around with the brightness and contrast on Photoshop. That's pretty much it.
I've never been able to get the desired effect with white pencils before, but then again, i've never used any paper other than plain white.
Also, I once tried flicking ink from a paintbrush onto one of my drawings. While the effect turned out very good, I ended up with droplets where i didn't want them. it heindsight, I should have covered the unwanted areas with paper.
When you submit your paintings, especially these 5 from the serial killers collection, will you be submitting captions/descriptions as well? I find they make the work on a whole much more effective. This one, for example, I would look at and go "ooh, a man has just killed this woman" but with the description we know that this was his mother, and it offers deeper understanding of the character himself.
I do like seeing a character in art, but I just find myself much more involved if i know bit of their characterisation.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Yes, white pencils are quite useless on white paper I find, but they work well on coloured paper. As for the flicking of paint, I forgot to mention that I had to cover parts with scrap pieces of paper.
As a matter of fact these images will be submitted onto a website with captions, or more specifically quotes. However when you use text, it's important not to reveal too much, otherwise there isn't much need for the artwork at all. The quotes I'm using will be what the killer actually said that would give a hint to what's going on in the image.
The quote I'm using for this image is; "I wanted to kill my mother since I was eight years old."
i am quite curious as to why you decided to do a serial killer series (it's a great idea in my opinion as i watch court tv and such all the time) but i am curious in the why....
btw: beautifully presented series. i love how the focus is on the killer with the subtlety of the crime in the background.

This serial killer series was project I had to do at my university. The theme was ‘Terrible People’ and serial killers seemed the most obvious choice. I mean, you can’t get worse than a serial killer can you? Well, I suppose world leaders/dictators like Hitler and Stalin were ‘terrible’ but there’s something about a serial killer that just makes my skin crawl.
Like many other people, I find serial killers fascinating. I don’t exactly know why. Maybe we are just curious about the awful things they did or perhaps we have difficulty understanding their motives and why they did it. Who knows?
it's like with cold cases, you don't know why it happened and who did it, but it keeps drawing you in....

Got some unscannable artwork? Own a camera but no scanner? Here's a guide of things to consider in order to effectively take quality photographs of your work. [A tutorial by `fox-orian]
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

I love the way the blood stains look like that have exploded from the arteries of the neck. Good job, albeit sickening.
